Addictions Care Course

Course Overview

This course provides an overview training on understanding, assessing, and caring variety of addictions. It covers essential concepts, evidence-based interventions, and ethical considerations in addiction care. Participants will learn how to provide effective support and treatment to individuals struggling with addiction, promote recovery, and prevent relapse.

Upon completion of this course, participants will have the knowledge and skills necessary to assess and treat addiction disorders effectively.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Describe approaches to prevention of addiction in Canada
  • Outline the models for explaining the etiology of addiction
  • Differentiate the various substance addictions
  • Explain the psychology behind process addictions such as gambling
  • Describe how to assess addictions
  • Explain and differentiate treatments

Learning Methods

  • Lecture/presentation
  • Discussion
  • Individual assignments and research (facilitate)
  • Facilitated group work
  • Case studies
  • A review of assignments and an overview of the daily lesson plan will be presented each day
  • Selected exercises to be completed outside of class time may be assigned
  • Development of critical thinking and customer service skills will be the focus of each class
  • Each class may begin with a daily lesson quiz
