Digital Media Design Course

Course Overview

This course will provide students with the foundations of media design and applying design elements and principles through using media software. Students will capture digital media and learn to manipulate them to create dynamic designs. This course will also expose students to the theoretical and fundamental concepts of multimedia, its applications, and the techniques involved. Topics to be covered include five elements of multimedia such as text and audio, animation, image and video, and the art of multimedia. Students will create a number of basic designs, including the production of a blog, website, radio (audio) broadcast, and video documentary. These tasks are intended only to introduce various platforms of digital design to assist the student in gaining familiarity of digital media used in 21st-century marketing and business.

Upon completion of this course, participants will have the ability to conceptualize, design, and execute digital media projects that effectively communicate ideas, engage audiences, and achieve desired outcomes. They will be equipped with practical design skills, creative problem-solving abilities, and a deep understanding of user-centered design principles in the digital context.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to;

  • Set up and update entries on what they have learned in a blog.
  • Follow tutorials to create a templated web page and enhance with various design principles learned and multimedia tools used in the course.
  • Describe why (digital) media is important and its elements.
  • Explain the principles of text, fonts, and typefaces illustrated in an image and design a brochure using those same principles.
  • Take a series of photos and prepare a digital photo essay to demonstrate an understanding of graphic representation, image acquisition and resolution, and tonal scale.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of digital media concepts, elements and principles of design, to prepare an infographic resume.
  • Write a script and prepare a radio drama and advertisement applying concepts of sound, audio file creation, and other aspects of audio.
  • Create a simple animation of moving objects.
  • Produce a short video documentary and publish to an appropriate Internet site.
  • Understand how HTML and CSS work to produce a web page
  • Set up a domain, hosting account, and create website pages
